Tyre Reviews
NOTE: The following reviews are the opinion of one of
our longest serving fitters, he has 28 years experience uder his belt
and has been selling and fitting tyres since the days of the cross ply,
you may find blunt reviews here!
The views are gathered from the thousands of customers he has serviced
over the years, they are pretty much up to date.
Avon
A good British made tyre, very good compounds for traction in wet &
dry, Z range are not going to last you the longest, as the tyre design
has less tread to start with on the outside edge shoulders, front tyres
ususally wear more on the edges nowadays as oversteering is easy when
you have power steering;) , on roundabouts the force of your car wanting
to go straight on & you yanking the steering wheel right puts tremendous
strain on the outside edge of the nearside tyre. You may find the nearside
outside edge of your tyre wears out first too, if your tracking has
been checked & it is ok, then I suggest you slow down;)
Continental
German technology, great tyres good on traction wet & dry and a
compound that gives long life, you will get many miles from you Continental
tyres. There is a catch, the sidewalls on some of the Premium Contact
and EcoContact have rather thin sidewalls, we change quite a few sidewall
damaged Contis that otherwise have plenty of tread on them. Stay away
from the kerbs.
Dunlop
Well they were a Great British tyre, some are still made in the UK but
they are Japanesse owned now, this makes them a Great Japanesse tyre
now. Good tyres made for whatever your doing, great 4x4 range for your
RAV4 to your Animal, sticky race tyres for your turbo or Run Flat Technology
for your BMW you will get plenty of miles from your Dunlops, no real
downside to this choice of tyre.
Bridgestone and Firestone
These two are also a very good choice of tyre and as Dunlop off a great
range of tyres that do their work as they should. Bridgestone have gained
a lot of technolgical advantages since suppling F1 sponsorship, their
sports range have good traction & wear ratings and also have substantial
sidewalls, their Run Flat RFT tyresare fitted as standard to BMW 3 &
5 Series. Firestone tyres in the late eighties did not last 5 minutes
on your hot hatch, that has changed nowadays and Firestone compounds
will last you just as long as most other brands.
Goodyear and Michelin
Why are you tarring these with the same brush you may ask?
Well they are both and since your asking in my opinion the best of the
bunch, Michelin will last you the longest here but for traction in all
conditions throughout their extensive ranges these two should be your
best choice. Did I say the Michelins last a little longer? Oh yes they
cost a little more as well, probably the dearest, buy them, they are
worth it.
Pirelli
Yet another good choice of tyre, good on traction wet & dry and
even in mud. they have a good treadwear rating which means you'll get
the miles out of them. Be careful when ordering mainly the P600 range
as they have specific fitments (J) for Jaguar (*) for Porche (F) Ford,
so please specify what your car is when ordering.
